An industrial thermal flow meter is a precision instrument designed to measure the flow rate of gases in pipelines using the principles of heat transfer. Unlike mechanical meters that rely on moving parts, thermal flow meters use a heated sensor element placed in the gas stream. As the gas passes over the sensor, it carries away heat in proportion to its mass flow rate. The instrument continuously monitors the energy required to maintain a constant sensor temperature, translating this data into highly accurate flow measurements.
Typically, the instrument contains two temperature sensors—one that is actively heated and one that serves as a reference. When gas flows through the pipe, it absorbs heat from the heated element. The rate of heat loss is directly proportional to the mass flow rate of the gas, allowing the device to measure mass flow without requiring separate pressure or temperature compensation.
Because thermal flow meters measure mass flow rather than volumetric flow, they are less sensitive to fluctuations in pressure and temperature that can cause errors in other flow measurement technologies. They are especially effective in applications with low-velocity or low-density gases where differential pressure devices (like orifice plates or Venturi meters) may lack sensitivity. Additionally, their design without moving parts ensures long-term stability and low maintenance in industrial environments.
