Sanitary Flow Meter
Sanitary Flow Meter
Food, beverage, dairy, and pharmaceutical processes have flow measurement requirements that go beyond accuracy. The meter must be hygienic — no dead legs, no crevices where product can accumulate and harbor bacteria, and materials that can withstand CIP (clean-in-place) and SIP (steam-in-place) cycles without damage. Standard industrial meters don't meet these requirements.
Our sanitary magnetic flow meters are built specifically for hygienic applications, with TriClover (tri-clamp) fittings, electropolished wetted surfaces, and FDA-compatible liner and electrode materials. They integrate directly into existing sanitary piping without adapters or compromises.
Why magnetic flow meters for sanitary applications?
MAG meters have no moving parts, no obstruction in the flow path, and no dead pockets where product can accumulate. The full-bore design means there's nothing for particulates, pulp, or viscous product to catch on. Cleaning fluids flow through exactly as the product does — so CIP is as effective on the meter as on the rest of the line.
The measurement principle doesn't care about viscosity, density, or the presence of pulp, particles, or CO2. Wine, juice, milk, beer, sauces, and pharmaceutical process fluids all work without any change to the meter setup.
Common sanitary flow meter applications
• Dairy — milk, cream, and whey flow measurement on pasteurizers, separators, and filling lines
• Beverage — juice, beer, wine, and soft drink flow measurement on blending, filling, and transfer lines
• Food processing — sauce, soup, dressing, and other liquid food flow measurement
• Pharmaceutical — process water, buffer solutions, and liquid API flow measurement in clean rooms and process vessels
• Biotech — fermentation broth, media, and buffer flow measurement in bioreactor systems
• Water for injection (WFI) — high-purity water measurement in pharmaceutical manufacturing
• CIP monitoring — measure cleaning solution flow and velocity to verify adequate CIP performance
What to look for when selecting a sanitary flow meter
Fitting type is the first consideration. TriClover (tri-clamp) is the most common sanitary fitting in food and beverage. Our meters are available with TriClover fittings as standard. Confirm your existing fitting size and standard before ordering.
Liner material must be compatible with your product and your cleaning protocol. PTFE is the broadest-compatibility choice, handling acids, caustics, and most cleaning agents. For high-temperature CIP (above 130°C), verify the liner's temperature rating.
Electrode material should be matched to your fluid. 316L stainless steel handles most food and beverage applications. Hastelloy C is available for more aggressive process fluids or cleaning chemicals.
3-A Sanitary Standards compliance may be required for dairy applications. Contact us if you need 3-A certified meters for your facility.
