Piston Prover Flow Meter Calibration

Piston prover calibration is the gold standard for low-to-medium flow gas measurement. By displacing a precisely known volume of gas with a calibrated piston over a measured time interval, piston provers achieve the highest accuracy available for calibrating thermal mass flow meters, mass flow controllers, delta-P flow meters, and MEMS-based instruments.

Tactical Flow Meter's piston prover system covers a wide dynamic range — from 1 SCCM up to 50,000 SCCM — using multiple range provers, all traceable to NIST standards with ±0.1% of reading accuracy.

How Piston Prover Calibration Works

A piston prover consists of a precision-bore cylinder with a low-friction piston. Gas flows through the meter under test and into the prover cylinder, pushing the piston at a rate determined by the flow. Optical or magnetic sensors detect when the piston passes known positions, and the elapsed travel time over a known volume gives a highly accurate volumetric flow rate.

This volumetric rate is converted to mass flow using the gas's density at measured temperature and pressure, producing a NIST traceable mass flow reference that can be directly compared against the meter's output.

NIST Traceability & Documentation

All piston prover calibrations are NIST traceable. Each certificate documents: gas identity and purity, temperature and pressure at time of calibration, flow points tested, piston prover volume and timing data, meter output, deviation, K-factors or correction curves, and expanded uncertainty statement. Certificates are accepted for ISO 9001, FDA 21 CFR, and semiconductor fab compliance.
